Cefprozil

Indications

Cefprozil is used for: Pharyngitis, Susceptible infections, Sinusitis, Otitis media, Skin and skin structure infections, Tonsillitis, Respiratory tract infections, Acute Maxillary Sinusitis, Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis

Adult Dose

Pharyngitis & Tonsillitis 500 mg PO qDay for 10 days Respiratory Tract Infections, Skin Infections 250-500 mg q12hr OR 500 mg qDay for10 days

Child Dose

Child: PO 15–30 mg/kg/day q12h

Renal Dose

Renal impairment: CrCl (ml/min) <30 Half normal dose.

Administration

May be taken with or without food. May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.

Contra Indications

Hypersensitivity.

Precautions

Hypersensitivity to penicillins; renal impairment; porphyria. Monitor renal and haematologic status. Pregnancy, lactation. Lactation: low distribution into breast milk; use with caution

Pregnancy-Lactation

Pregnancy Category: B Lactation: low distribution into breast milk; use with caution

Interactions

Renal excretion delayed by probenecid. Decreases contraceptive effect of oestrogen-containing oral contraceptives.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Cefprozil : 1-10% Nausea (3.5%), Diarrhea (2.9%), Elevated LFTs (2%), Diaper rash (1.5%), Abdominal pain (1%), Dizziness (1%), Vomiting (1%) <1% Eosinophilia, Superinfection, Vaginitis, Cholestatic jaundice, Elevated BUN & creatinine, Prolonged PT Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis.

Mechanism of Action

Cefprozil inhibits cell wall synthesis and has activity against a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
