Indications

Dithranol 1% Topical is used for: Psoriasis

Adult Dose

Topical/Cutaneous Subacute and chronic psoriasis Adult: Conventional treatment: Apply onto the affected lesions for a few hr before washing off. May increase the duration of contact extended to overnight periods or longer. Protect surrounding unaffected skin by applying white soft paraffin.

Child Dose

Topical/Cutaneous Subacute and chronic psoriasis Child: Conventional treatment: Apply onto the affected lesions for a few hr before washing off. May increase the duration of contact extended to overnight periods or longer. Protect surrounding unaffected skin by applying white soft paraffin.

Contra Indications

Acute or pustular psoriasis. Inflamed skin. Hypersensitivity.

Precautions

Avoid use on face, skin flexures, inner thighs, upper arms and genitals. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.

Side effects of Dithranol 1% Topical : Burning sensation and irritation esp on perilesional skin. Hair and skin discoloration.

Mechanism of Action

Dithranol reduces the mitotic rate and proliferation of epidermal cells in psoriasis by inhibiting DNA replication, cellular respiration and key cellular enzymes.Anti-psoriatic action may be partly through inactivating epidermal 12-lipoxygenase & reducing levels of endothelial cell adhesion molecules which are markedly elevated in psoriasis.
