Mebhydrolin

Indications

Mebhydrolin is used for: Allergic conditions

Adult Dose

Oral Allergic conditions Adult: 100-300 mg/day.

Child Dose

Oral Allergic conditions Child: <2 yr: 50-100 mg/day; 2-5 yr: 50-150 mg/day; 5-10 yr: 100-200 mg/day; >10 yr: 100-300 mg/day.

Renal Dose

Administration

Should be taken with food. Take during or shortly after meals.

Contra Indications

Premature infants and neonates. Acute asthmatic attack.

Precautions

Closed-angle glaucoma; urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia or pyloroduodenal obstruction; epilepsy. Elderly. Pregnancy. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Interactions

Enhanced sedation with alcohol or other CNS depressants. Additive antimuscarinic effects with MAOIs, atropine, TCAs. May mask warning symptoms caused by ototoxic agents e.g. aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Mebhydrolin : CNS depression; paradoxical stimulation (high doses, children or elderly); headache, psychomotor impairment; dry mouth, thickened respiratory tract secretions, blurred vision; urinary difficulty or retention, constipation, increased gastric reflux; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, epigastric pain. Rarely, blood disorders. Convulsions, sweating, myalgia, paraesthesias, extrapyramidal effects, tremor, sleep disturbances, depression, confusion, tinnitus, hypotension, hair loss. Potentially Fatal: Anaphylaxis.

Mechanism of Action

Mebhydrolin is an ethylenediamine derivative antihistamine with antimuscarinic and sedative properties.
