Indications

Mepyramine Maleate 2% Topical is used for: Pruritic skin disorders

Adult Dose

Topical/Cutaneous Hypersensitivity reactions, Pruritic skin disorders Adult: Apply 2% cream on affected areas.

Contra Indications

Severe liver disease; premature infants or full-term neonates; eczema (topical).

Precautions

Pregnancy; lactation; severe CV disorders; asthma; drowsiness; angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia, pyloroduodenal obstruction; renal and hepatic impairment; elderly; epilepsy. May affect ability to drive and operate machinery. Broken skin (topical).

Interactions

increased effects with CNS depressants (e.g. alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytic sedatives and neuroleptics). Additive effects with other antimuscarinics (e.g. TCAs, atropine).

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Mepyramine Maleate 2% Topical : Sedation; antimuscarinic effects, CNS depression and disturbances; occasionally, paradoxical CNS stimulation; psychomotor impairment; headache; palpitations and arrhythmias; convulsions, sweating, myalgia, paraesthesias, extrapyramidal symptoms, tremor, sleep and GI disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions and blood dyscrasias; hypotension; hair loss; tinnitus.

Mechanism of Action

Mepyramine is an ethylenediamine derived antihistamine with antimuscarinic and sedating properties.
