Indications

Selenium Sulfide topical is used for: Seborrhoeic dermatitis, Dandruff

Adult Dose

Topical/Cutaneous Seborrhoeic dermatitis; Dandruff Adult: As 2.5% shampoo or lotion: Massage into wet scalp, leave for 2-3 min then rinse thoroughly. Use twice wkly for 2 wk, may repeat at less frequent intervals subsequently. As 1% shampoo or lotion: Appy 1-2 times wkly. Topical/Cutaneous Tinea versicolor Adult: As 2.5% lotion: Apply to affected areas, lather w/ a small amount of water and leave on skin for 10 min, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat procedure once daily for 7 days.

Child Dose

Topical/Cutaneous Seborrhoeic dermatitis; Dandruff Child: 5-14 yr As 2.5% shampoo or lotion: Massage into wet scalp, leave for 2-3 min then rinse thoroughly. Use twice wkly for 2 wk, may repeat at less frequent intervals subsequently. As 1% shampoo or lotion: Appy 1-2 times wkly.

Contra Indications

Hypersensitivity. Broken or severely inflamed skin.

Precautions

Avoid contact with all mucous membranes, including eyes, lips, broken/inflamed skin. Risk of systemic toxicity. Discontinue of redness or irritation occur. Patient Counselling Remove gold, silver and other metallic jewellery prior to use. Avoid use of shampoo w/in 48 hr of applying hair dye, straightening or waving preparations.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Pregnancy Category: C Lactation: not known if distributed in human milk; use cation

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Selenium Sulfide topical : Skin irritation, esp in the genital areas and skin folds; oily scalp, hair discouloration, hair loss.

Mechanism of Action

Selenium sulfide has antifungal and antiseborrhoeic properties. It is active against Pityrosporum ovale, a yeast-like fungus that is part of the normal flora of the scalp. It also has a cytostatic effect on cells of the epidermis and follicular epithelium, thus reducing corneocyte production.
