Sodium Chloride 5% Eye prep

Indications

Sodium Chloride 5% Eye prep is used for: Corneal Edema, Pain or swelling of the cornea, eye exams.

Adult Dose

Temporary Relief of Corneal Edema 1-2 drops in the affected eye (s) every 3 or 4 hours or as directed by a physician.

Child Dose

Temporary Relief of Corneal Edema 1-2 drops in the affected eye (s) every 3 or 4 hours or as directed by a physician.

Contra Indications

Contraindicated in patients who develop allergic reactions to this medicine.

Precautions

Precaution should be taken if patients have history of eye problems or allergies.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should seek advice of health care provider before using OTC drugs Lactation: Consult a health care provider before using in breast-feeding women.

Interactions

May affect serum concentrations of lithium.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Sodium Chloride 5% Eye prep : Vision may be temporarily blurred for a period after applying the drops. Burning or irritation of the eye may occur temporarily when first applied. Other side effects are redness, pain, swelling in or around the eyes, sensitivity to light, and headache.

Mechanism of Action

Sodium chloride is the major extracellular cation. It is important in electrolyte and fluid balance, osmotic pressure control and water distribution as it restores sodium ions. It is used as a source of electrolytes and water for hydration, treatment of metabolic acidosis, priming solution in haemodialysis and treatment of hyperosmolar diabetes. It is also used as diluents for infusion of compatible drug additives.
