Sodium Thiosulfate
Indications
Sodium Thiosulfate is used for:
Calcium urolithiasis, Cyanide poisoning, Secondary Preventive Treatment for Calciphylaxis in Dialysis Patients
Adult Dose
Oral
A 2 M (molar) solution can be prepared with 74.4 g in 150 mL free water; 2.6 g can be given orally daily or 3 times a week.
Dose is limited by diarrhea.

Oedematous sodium-retaining conditions.
Precautions
May irritate eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
Pregnancy-Lactation
Pregnancy Category: C
Interactions
Decreases toxicity of cisplatin through rapid chemical inactivation of its platinum component.
Adverse Effects
Side effects of Sodium Thiosulfate :
Osmotic disturbances. Oral: catharsis (at high doses).
Mechanism of Action
Thiosulfate is sulfur donor utilized by rhodenase to convert cyanide to less toxic thiocyanate.
Cisplatin toxicity: Na-thiosulfate combines w/ cisplatin to form a complex nontoxic to both normal/cancerous cells. Increases solubility of calcium.
