Indications

Sulfanilamide vaginal prep is used for: Vulvovaginal candidiasis

Adult Dose

Vaginal Vulvovaginal candidiasis Adult: As vaginal cream: 1 applicator ful (about 6 g of 15% cream) once or bid for 30 days. As vaginal suppository: 1 suppository (1.05 g) bid for 7 days.

Sensitivity to sulfonamides; lactation.

Precautions

Third trimester of pregnancy Severe blook reactions including aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, and other blood dyscrasias reported Severe reactions including toxic epidermal necrolysis, and Stevens Johnson syndrome reported Fulminant hepatic necrosis reported with sulfonamides regardless of route Discontinue if skin rash reaction occurs

Side effects of Sulfanilamide vaginal prep : Increased discomfort or burning sensation.

Mechanism of Action

Sulfanilamide is a short-acting sulfonamide with antibacterial activity is less than that of sulfamethoxazole. It interferes with the synthesis of nucleic acids in sensitive organisms by blocking the conversion of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to the co-enzyme dihydrofolic acid.
