Tolnaftate 1% Topical
Indications
Tolnaftate 1% Topical is used for:
Superficial dermatophyte infections, pityriasis versicolor
Adult Dose
Topical/Cutaneous
Superficial dermatophyte infections; Pityriasis versicolor
Adult: Apply cream bid for 2-6 wk; repeat if necessary.
Continue treatment for 2 wk after disappearance of all symptoms to prevent recurrence of infection.
Child Dose
Topical/Cutaneous
Superficial dermatophyte infections; Pityriasis versicolor
Child: Apply cream bid for 2-6 wk; repeat if necessary.
Continue treatment for 2 wk after disappearance of all symptoms to prevent recurrence of infection.

Contra Indications
Hypersensitivity. Nail and scalp infections.
Precautions
Exposure to eyes. For external use only. Discontinue treatment if condition does not improve within 10 days.

Pregnancy Category: C
Lactation: safety in nursing infants unknown

Side effects of Tolnaftate 1% Topical :
Irritation, pruritus, contact dermatitis.
Mechanism of Action
Tolnaftate is an antifungal which inhibits growth of dermatophytes e.g. Epidermophyton, Microsporum, trichophyton spp, and Malassezia furfur by distorting the hyphae and stopping mycelial growth. It is inactive against Candida spp or bacteria.
