Tropicamide 1% Eye prep
Indications
Tropicamide 1% Eye prep is used for:
Iridocyclitis, Production of cycloplegia
Adult Dose
Ophthalmic
Production of cycloplegia
Adult: Instill 1-2 drops of a 1% solution repeated after 5 minutes. An additional drop may be admin after 20-30 minutes for prolonged effect.
Child Dose
Ophthalmic
Production of cycloplegia
Child: Instill 1-2 drops of a 1% solution repeated after 5 minutes. An additional drop may be admin after 20-30 minutes for prolonged effect.

Contra Indications
Contraindicated in persons showing hypersensitivity to any component of this preparation.
Precautions
Elderly, children, pregnancy. Hypertension, hyperthyroidism, DM, cardiac disorders. To reduce systemic absorption, press on the lacrimal sac for 1-2 minutes following instillation. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities and protect eyes from bright illumination when pupils are dilated. May fail to produce adequate cycloplegia in children.

Lactation: not known if distributed in milk
Interactions
May antagonise effects of ophthalmic carbachol, pilocarpine, or cholinesterase inhibitors.
Adverse Effects
Side effects of Tropicamide 1% Eye prep :
Transient stinging, blurred vision, photophobia and superficial punctate keratitis have been reported with the use of tropicamide. Increased intraocular pressure has been reported following the use of mydriatics.
Dryness of the mouth, tachycardia, headache, allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, pallor, central nervous system disturbances and muscle rigidity have been reported with the use of tropicamide.
Mechanism of Action
Tropicamide is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic which causes relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the iris resulting in pupillary dilatation. It also causes paralysis of the ciliary muscle leading to loss of accommodation.
